School Age Children Choose What to Learn

COVID-19 made it difficult for parents who need to work. If you have a child in elementary school, it became even harder when summer camps and other summer programs did not open this summer. The Becky Gates Children’s Center rose to the challenge. We knew the impact this was having on our families, let alone the Texas A&M University community. We quickly got approvals from licensing and the university to open a school age classroom for essential employees. The school age classroom has turned out to be a model school where children are deciding what they are learning about on a weekly basis. Children choose projects to work on, they choose clubs to participate in, and they choose what sport and activities they want to participate in. They have daily classroom meetings where discussions occur around 21st Century skills and traits such as leadership and conflict resolution. Daily, the children play games, enjoy music and art, get physical activity, perform science experiments, solve hands-on math problems, read, write, and learn about a social studies. So far, the children have created a castle, built an entire town, made kites, made books, and made cars to go to a drive-in movie!
