Center Spotlight: Music and Marketing Staff

This month’s center spotlight shines on our Music and Marketing student workers.

In March of 2020, our music program was put on hold due to COVID 19, however we will be starting up the program again next week! We have many new updates to our music program and are so excited to share them with our students and families. We are extremely thankful for the Brazos Valley Junior Leagues grant of $3000 that financed new instruments for our children to explore. Their support will have a huge impact on this program and our students.

Another new development in this program is our new music teacher, Alexia Williams. Alexia is a friendly face around the center as she has worked here for the past 2 years as a teaching assistant. When our administrators began looking to fill this role Alexia was the perfect fit. Alexia is a Performance Studies major and is passionate about researching Ethnomusicology after she graduates. Specifically she wants to research the history of Jazz, Soul, and Blues music and teach others of her findings. Our new music program was the best fit for her and we cannot wait to see her flourish in this new role. Alexia will meet with each class once a week, teaching them about different instruments, songs, and cultures. Her favorite part about her new role in this program is the “endless support” she receives from the directors and staff.

I’d also like to use this spotlight to introduce myself, my name is Gracie Dorris and I am the Marketing student worker. I am a senior studying Communication and getting a minor in Business. As the marketing student worker, I put together the newsletter every month, post to social media, produce flyers, and assist the Administrative staff with any special projects. I am also currently working on planning our upcoming book fair and I cannot wait to see our families and students enjoy it.

I have been working at the center since my freshman year and absolutely love it. I began working as a TA my first year here. I then transitioned to the front desk, and now I have been in the marketing role since March. My favorite thing about working at the center is spending time with our students every day. They never fail to make me smile. I also am extremely grateful for our amazing staff. I get to work one on one with our Administrative staff everyday and they always allow me to be creative and push me to be the best I can be. Feel free to stop and say hello if you see me around the center!
