Center Spotlight: Music Student Worker

This month’s center spotlight shines on our new student music teacher. We are so excited to welcome Mikayla into the BGCC family!

Mikayla is a junior from Mesquite Texas. “I grew up anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour away from downtown Dallas. (Depending on traffic).” Unfortunately we can all relate to Mikayla, the traffic is no better in College Station. Mikayla is an Electronic Systems Engineering Technology major, but her passion for music is what brought her to our center.

“I have always used music as a way to express myself. I didn’t actually start singing until I was a senior in high school and then I just absolutely fell in love with the experience and the memories I made. I joined the Texas A&M Women’s Chorus and served as Performance Manager during the 2020-2021 semesters and was the President this past fall. I had to take a break due to my mental and physical health. I was then told of this job where I could continue with my love of music while helping foster children’s love of music and I jumped at the chance.”

“My number one goal post graduation is to go into app development. I really hope to one day develop apps that help educate parents and children on the importance of mental health in schooling via a fun interactive app. I want to advocate for a better understanding of the signs of various mental illnesses that can affect children and teens.”

It is clear that Mikayla is a wonderful addition to our staff and is passionate about making a positive impact on our students and families. “I cannot wait to get to know the kids and the families! I am so excited to help introduce the kids to the power of music and help them better express themselves!”

Do not hesitate to say hello or introduce yourself to Mikayla if you see her around the center. We are so excited to see the impact she has at Becky Gate’s Children’s Center!
