Center Spotlight: Classroom Activities

This month’s center spotlight shines on some special activities going on in our classrooms.

In our center this past month, we celebrated Spanish Heritage Month. This is an annual celebration for the history and culture of U.S. Latinx and Hispanic communities. Our classrooms always foster a learning environment that encourages education on different cultures. Our students’ education on diversity is essential to A&M’s core values of respect and loyalty. Through different lessons and activities, our teachers help our students understand the importance of respecting other cultures and always being supportive of those around you.

This past month our students learned about different Hispanic individuals who have been influential in America’s history. Our students learned about Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic women to go to space, read short stories by children’s book author Jose Luis Orozco, and celebrated Frida Kahlo’s famous self portraits.

Our students also found an appreciation for Hispanic culture through cuisine. They had tastings of different Hispanic foods such as, tortillas and a mixed bean salad. Some of our students even made their own tacos through an art activity and displayed them for our families to enjoy.

Many of our classrooms found unique ways to celebrate the Fall season beginning last month. Our Whoop class is enjoying their very own pumpkin patch. Through this fun activity, they pick what kind of pumpkin they would like, any ingredients they may need for a pumpkin pie, and “pay” for their purchase. Through this activity our teachers have been educating the students on the different parts of the pumpkin as well as the value of money. The Whoop class happened to love this activity so much that they now have an entire “grocery market” in the classroom.

Activities like this are so important to our students’ education, teaching them valuable lessons that will carry them through the future. We are so appreciative of our teaching staff and their constant creativity for our students.
